Dear Shannon,
Of course, it doesn't have to be a 5 paragraph essay necessarily. But it's a good idea to start from a standard and than put in creativity. People, who have a lot of experience in writing (even if it's just for college), do not use any template. Some do not even write draft, outline and all that is recommended for beginners. With experience it comes naturally on subconscious level. Your suggestion of course is great. Giving freedom in writing is the best thing a professor can do for a student to have some interest.

Why does it have to be a 5 paragraph essay? I know we teach this as a learning point for students when they are young, but it confines the creativity that some students have so they can fit it all into a neat 5 paragraphs. I took a composition class in college once and it wasnt until the professor said that it didnt have to be in 5 paragraph form that I truly began enjoying the writing process. It was freeing for me to not have to fit into a mold. It is so hard to get the attention of students these days. Maybe giving the student the freedom to write on a topic they are interested in and a page count expectation is enough to allow the student to find enjoyment in writing, too. (I was an English Lit major and it worked for me.) Just a suggestion...
