I know we teach this as a learning point for students when they are young, but it confines the creativity that some students have so they can fit it all into a neat 5 paragraphs. I took a composition class in college once and it wasnt until the professor said that it didnt have to be in 5 paragraph form that I truly began enjoying the writing process. It was freeing for me to not have to fit into a mold. It is so hard to get the attention of students these days. Maybe giving the student the freedom to write on a topic they are interested in and a page count expectation is enough to allow the student to find enjoyment in writing, too.
