Monday, March 22, 2010 in Research Paper Writing Guide by EssayCapital | No Comments |
One of the main components of a research paper is the title page. This section is not one of the optional ones and is strictly included in all research documents. The title page of a research paper is to be framed as per the style used for documentation. And each style has its unique way of presenting the title page. You will be expected to know how to frame the research paper title page as per the style asked for by your instructor.
The title page is expected to give some formal information about the research paper and the author of the research paper, to the reader. The information included in the title page is somewhat the same for most of the documentation styles, but the layout is completely different for each style. Knowing the unique aspects of the title pages of each format is important.
• MLA style: The most peculiar feature of MLA style research paper title page is that it is not a separate one. It is a part of the first page of the research paper. On the top left hand side of the paper, you can give your name, the name of your instructor, the course you are attending and the date. On the top right hand corner, you must type your surname and page number. A few spaces below the date, centrally aligned would be the title of the research paper. Right below the title, leaving double-space, you can start typing your research paper. It is just as simple as this to frame the title page in an MLA style research paper.
• APA style: In an APA style title page, the most important feature is the running head. This appears at the top right hand corner followed by the page number. The running head is a part of the title, which can stand on its own. It should be the most prominent part of the title. Towards the middle of the page, aligned centrally, would be the complete title of the research paper, your name and the name of the course. A few spaces below you must type the name of your instructor and the date. An APA style research paper title page would be a separate sheet attached to the main document.
• Chicago style: On a Chicago style title page, the title would come first. This would appear towards the middle of the top half of your title page. It will be followed by your name, which will be placed at the centre of the title page. A few spaces below, you must give the name of the course, the name of your instructor and the date. All the information would be centrally aligned.
Each style has its own specifications regarding the formatting of the various components of a research paper. The research paper title page, being one of the most prominent parts of the document, is definitely unique to each style. Hence you must prepare it as per the instructions given in your assignment guidelines. MLA style Research Paper Title Page Format
Thursday, January 28, 2010 in Research Paper Writing Guide by EssayCapital | No Comments |
The style of documentation of research findings developed by Modern Language Association is known as the MLA style. It is one of the most commonly used styles for academic research papers. It is simple and with lesser clauses than the other styles. It is mainly used for the documentation of literature, arts and humanities researches. The research paper title page in MLA style is a very good example of the simplicity of its methods.
The purpose of the title page is to give the reader information regarding the writer and the general aspects regarding the submission. The components of a title page are more or less the same in all the documentation styles. What changes is the way you arrange the information. Even though the differences look too insignificant to you, those fine differences are what set each writing style apart from another.
The main point to note about an MLA style research paper title page is that it is not a separate one. There are certain cases where the instructor would ask for a separate title page. If there are no specific instructions regarding the title page in the guidelines of your MLA style research paper, it is to be formatted according to the style format.
In an MLA style research paper, the information is to be arranged on the top of the first page of your research paper itself. The name of the author, the name of the instructor, the course and the date come on the top left hand side of the first page of your research paper. These are to be arranged, double-spaced, one below the other, respectively. Right across this, on the top right hand corner of the page, you will place your surname and the page number, both in the same line. Below the date, leave two spaces down and type the title. Align it to the center. Below the title, leave double space and start writing your research paper.
To be more precise:
• Top left: Name of the student, professor, course and date.
• Top right: Surname of the student, page number
• Centrally aligned below the date: the title of the research paper.
• Right below the title: the research paper.
It is quite easy to learn and follow the MLA style of writing once you understand its simple ways. But quite ironically, students get confused about the simplicity of this style as they expect more complex rules for research paper writing styles. But rest assured that MLA style is, indeed, as simple as it seems. Research paper title page is the easiest part of a research paper assignment. For the same reason it is necessary to pay attention to the way you present it. There is nothing that can go wrong with this page and hence if you make a mistake with the formatting of the title page, it will create a very bad impression and will be counted as carelessness and lack of commitment.
Before submitting the document, make sure that the names and title have been spelled correctly on your research paper title page. Check the spacing and alignment as well. Remember that your research papers reflect your commitment to your studies.

Organizing the Research Paper Title Page

The title page of a research paper is meant to give the readers information on certain specific aspects. It is not a very lengthy document or a difficult one to write. All the same, the specifications have to be followed accurately and without fail. For the same reason it is necessary to know the requirements of the research paper title pages and the different styles that can be applied.
The first step to writing a good research paper is a thorough study of the guidelines and the instructions given in it regarding the various parts of the research paper. You will find instructions on the topic, the various parts of the structure and also the type and style. Most structural aspects are allowed to be followed as per the rules of the style asked for. But there are certain cases where alterations will be specified. Each research paper assignment should be presented with due regard to each and every one of the instructions and specifications given in the research paper guidelines. Certain documentation styles ask for a separate title page where as some others include the details in the first page of the main document.
A research paper title page should convey the details of the aspects related to the research paper and not the content. An APA style title page requires details on the author, the title of the research paper, the name of the course, the professor’s name and the date to be included in a separate title page. The complete title is to be arranged at the vertical and horizontal central point of the sheet. A short title or a part of the main title and the page number should be printed at the top right hand corner of the page. This short title would be repeated in all the pages next to the page number. The name of the author, the name of the course, the instructor’s name and the date should appear at the bottom of the page, aligned centrally.
The title page of an MLA style research paper is to be separated from the main document, only if the guidelines specify so. It is very important to remember this point because a normal research paper title page in MLA style is included in the main document itself. The details are arranged neatly on the top portion of the first page of the research paper document. The details to be given include are similar to that of the APA style title page even though the pattern is different.
In an MLA style title page, the name of the author, the name of the professor, the name of the course and the date would find its space on the top left hand side of the first page of the main document. The title will be placed below these, but centrally aligned, right above the introductory paragraph of your research paper. Your surname and the page number would appear on the top right hand side of the page. If the guidelines specify the requirements for a separate title page, do exactly as instructed.
Research paper title pages are to be formatted exactly as asked by your instructor. The information given on the title page should be accurate as there is no excuse for making a mistake with personal information or the title of the research paper.
