Developing a Narrative Essay Topic

Finding a suitable topic for a narrative assignment is not a difficult task. The tough part is to develop it effectively into a good essay. For those who possess good writing skills, it will come naturally. But for those who are not so good with words and who haven’t inherited any creative genes, narrative essay writing can be quite a challenge. Narratives can get quite boring if not presented well. And whether you are good with words or not, there is no way you can escape narrative assignments, especially if you are a literature student.
There are various approaches you can adopt to a narrative topic. The focus of the topic and the objective of the assignment must be used as the criteria for determining which approach would be the best. Your aim is to bring out the best in the topic without losing the focus. And in a narrative essay, it is absolutely necessary to keep your focus steadily on the right aspect of the topic as narration is a technique which is prone to digressions. Staying clear of all types of digressions is necessary to be able to make your point clear to the reader.
Narrative essays are quite flexible about the writing methods. Hence, unless the guidelines instruct you to follow a particular method, you can choose your own preferred method or approach to the topic. One such approach you can use for developing your topic is to start with a point which is more generalized and then move on to the specific aspect. For example; you may start by talking about how the change in climates and their influence on the moods of people amazed you. You may then move on to a specific climate and how you observed the mood changes in humans which were caused by it.
You may also start with the narrow aspect and take the discussion to the wider realms of the topic. To use the same topic as above to cite an example; start by talking about the particular climate which made you notice the mood swings which were triggered by it. Then move on to say how you always wondered if it was true that climate changes can affect human behavior. Both these approaches can be handled effectively if you know how to develop the story.
There are certain things which you need to ensure while developing a topic. Think of which was it sounds better. Consider your audience or readers. Think of which way it would interest them. If you do not know enough of your readers to evaluate their preferences, then go by your own judgment of which approach would bring the best in the topic. Sometimes you will also need to consider which approach would fulfill the objective of the assignment more satisfactorily.
Developing a narrative essay topic is a time-consuming job. Time, patience and good writing skills are inevitable for preparing an interesting essay using narrative techniques. Taking a look at essay samples would most certainly help you get a better grasp of the technique. But narrative essay writing always comes down to your own creative writing skills. Finding a Good Topic for a Personal Experience Essay
Monday, November 23, 2009 in All About Essay by EssayCapital | No Comments |
Writing a personal experience essay can be a very interesting experience in itself. The essay, as is evident from the name, talks about an experience a person has had in the past. This experience should ideally have a moral or a lesson which is useful for the kind of audience you are addressing. Hence, it is very important that you find the right kind of topic for this type of essay, if you are aiming at capturing the attention of your audience.
You can address any kind of a past experience in your personal experience essay. To choose the best subject or experience for your essay, you can consider the following tips.
First and foremost, consider whether you want to talk of a pleasant experience which has had a great influence in your life. Or is it something tragic or unpleasant, which changed your life forever and made you wiser, that you wish to talk about? Or yet, do you wish to share a funny situation you found yourself in, at some point of time in your life, which can give everyone a good laugh?
It happens very often that when a new baby is born in a family, the elder one gets neglected. It is not something that the parents do intentionally but the pressure on the mom inevitably leads to the situation. If you have a younger sibling, you would also possibly have gone through that stage. Talking about the days when your sibling came into your family and how you took the sudden blow of losing the attention which was your right till then, could be a very good topic.
If you are looking at a funny situation, then you could think of some very embarrassing situation where you accidentally found yourself in and how you managed your way out of there. Or you could talk about an outing you had with your family or friends and make it interesting by narrating the funny sequences or things which happened during the trip.
If you are willing to talk about something that can still bring tears to your eyes, there would be nothing better to share than the loss of a dear one. Losing loved ones is something no human being can escape. Hence, sharing how you overcame the tough situation can not only help others but can also be an inspiration to those who could be facing a similar situation at the time.
Another option could be a horrifying incident. Have you ever got trapped alone in a house in the night with the feeling of shadows moving around you? Have you spent sleepless nights imagining yourself as the hero or heroine of a horror movie? Have you ever had to witness a horrible accident that left you shocked for days after that? Such incidents will most certainly be interesting topics for a personal experience essay.
Whatever topic you are choosing, understand that, to write an interesting personal experience essay, you will need excellent narration skills. Narrative essays and all assignments which use narration techniques will ask for good writing and narrative skills. If you are not sure of your talents in narration, you should try to master the art or take professional help for your academic writing assignments which require this particular skill.

Writing a Personal Experience Essay
Friday, November 20, 2009 in All About Essay by EssayCapital | 2 Comments |
Out of the different types of assignments given to students, one would be that of a personal experience essay. As the name suggests, this essay focuses on a real experience that the person has had in the past. It comes under narrative essays, as you are narrating an experience. It is quite similar to an autobiographic essay.
There is one very obvious difference between an autobiographic essay and a personal experience essay. The former concentrates on you, where as, the latter has its focus on the experience you have had. To put it in another way, you could also say, a personal experience essay is more about what life has taught you; but an autobiographical essay talks about the kind of person you are and the way you lived your life. Even though it is not much of a difference, it is good if you understand where exactly to draw the line between both.
The most important thing to remember while writing an essay related to your own life is that it is not easy to make it interesting to another person. Personal experiences can be interesting while communicating verbally or between a group of people who knows each other. But while addressing a crowd who knows nothing about you, it is not so easy to make your life sound interesting. There is no reason why your experience should sound appealing to a stranger, unless you present it so. Hence, the most important part of writing an interesting personal experience essay is the presentation.
When you are given the theme, look back to see what all comes into your mind immediately. From the few you might be able to remember, pick one that is closest to the given topic or theme. Try to look at your choice from another person’s point of view to determine how well the experience matches with the topic. This is necessary because you may not be able to judge your own life very well from your own view point.
For a personal experience essay, it is not mandatory to give a separate introduction. If you feel that your experience needs an introduction, you can go ahead and give one. But you can also start off straight away with your narration of your experience. But make the first line intriguing enough to make the reader inquisitive about the rest of the content.
Your body paragraphs should be rich in narration. You should be able to take the reader through the incident rather than tell them about it. If you have good narration skills, a personal experience essay will indeed be a very easy assignment for you. But if you are not one of the lucky ones who can keep people still, for hours while they are talking, you should find out what you can do to improve your narration skills.
Your personal experience essay should be concluded with a brief note on what you learned from that experience and why you still remember it so vividly. Try not to include fresh parts of the story in the conclusion. Don’t end your assignment abruptly. Remember, a smooth ending is as important as a good beginning.
