Choosing a Good Topic for your Research Paper or Essay

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Some of the academic writing assignments come with topics, whereas, some of them leave the option of choosing the topic, to the student. If you are allowed to pick the topic for your research paper or essay, you should make use of the opportunity to choose one that suits you the best. There are a few things you should keep in mind while searching for the suitable one.

First and foremost, you should read and understand the given guidelines regarding the topic. If you have been allowed to choose a topic, your ability to choose the most appropriate one will also come under scrutiny. Hence, you have to go through the guidelines over and over again, till you have understood all the clauses well.

Elimination method has proved to be the most effective one to choose the best. It applies for your academic assignments as well. Instead of looking for the best topic straight away, it is always advisable to short list a few and then choose the best out of it.

Most of the assignments, even when the topic is not specified, come with instructions on which particular sector or genre of the subject the topic should be from. Keeping those points in mind, you should short list a few topics which appeal to you at first sight. Once you have done that, it will become much easier for you to close in on a good topic which not only suits your interests and skills but also adheres to the allowed limits.

The topic you choose should be something that you can handle within the given deadline. There are certain factors which will help you determine this. To find out whether the topic will fit into the permitted time for the project, you should consider:

• The given deadline
• Your knowledge of the topic
• The suitable research methodology
• Accessibility to the research materials
• Availability of sources

You will have to put all these facts together, to find the best topic for your assignment. Once you have figured out a few which fits into all these, then it is time to make the final choice. Out of the list, choose a topic which you feel most interested in. Your interest in the subject will, most certainly, reflect in your thesis. If you choose something that is not of any particular interest to you, it is possible that the long procedure of research will become a harrowing experience for you.

Try to pick a topic that has not been discussed very often. Fresh topics have the advantage of being able to raise the curiosity in the readers or audience. But make sure that you will be able to find enough research material if the topic of your choice is not a common one.

While looking around for the topic, you should always remember that the topic has a big part to play in the outcome of your research paper, term paper or essay project. Choosing the topic is only the first part of your assignment. Hence remember not to waste too much time on it.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Being assigned the task of writing a research paper on cancer should be considered a privilege, considering the fact that it is one of the biggest threats to human kind. Cancer is the term for the uncontrollable growth of cells in a human body. Even after repeated attempts, scientists world over, have failed to find a cure for this dreadful illness. Researches are still being carried out, but without much progress.

To choose a topic for your cancer research paper, you don’t have to limit yourself to the medical aspects of the illness alone. There are so many different angles – social, psychological and biological – for this research and you can pick a topic from any of these for the research, on this particular subject.

There are a lot of factors which contribute to cancer. Habits like smoking and chewing tobacco have been found to cause the growth of cancerous cells in human body. Certain plastics, when used in close contact with food regularly also seem to aid the growth of cancerous cells. And this deadly disease can pass on to a person genetically as well.

Every day you keep hearing rumors on the causes of cancer. Even though some of what you hear is true, there is a lot of false information also floating around. People come up with fresh ideas every day and talk about it authoritatively, giving rise to rumors which are totally baseless. It will prove a good topic to pick one of those myths and try to find out the truth about it.

You can also try and list out the reasons as to why scientists have been unable to find a cure for this. You may also do a research on the biological aspects which could contribute to it. Another good topic for your cancer research paper would be the psychological impact caused by this disease and how well it works to include a psychological approach in the treatment of cancer patients. Since there is no cure for it, it will prove a good topic to find out certain methods of boosting the immunity against cancer.

Remember to confirm the availability of the topic at the time you are picking it because it is one of the most chosen subjects for research and the topics which come under it get taken by researchers regularly.

You can choose to do a quantitative or qualitative research on cancer, depending on the topic you have chosen. Whichever method you might choose, remember that you are dealing with a topic of utmost importance and try to make your research useful by picking a relevant topic and doing a genuine research on it.

Sometimes, the research paper comes with certain guidelines on the topic as well. How and Why to Avoid Plagiarism

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Plagiarism is an issue which has been haunting the writing industry from the time it evolved into a profession. But in earlier days there was not much awareness about the issue. There were not many methods available either, to detect this crime or confirm it. But in today’s world, there are strong laws against it and the punishments are rather severe. And unfortunately, even unintentional or accidental plagiarism is considered punishable.

This issue has been noticed, most commonly, among students. If you dig till its root, you will find that there are many underlying causes which lead to deliberate or intentional plagiarism in students. Most students, when faced with academic writing assignments, feel unsure about their own writing skills and adapt to copying and pasting information from web sources or books. Some others simply find it an easy job to copy and paste rather than doing it themselves. And there are also those, who keep their assignments till the last minute and realize that they have time for nothing but to copy and paste from articles written by others.

Internet has aided plagiarism to a big extent. Most students take it for granted that, among so much information one or two stolen paragraphs will go unnoticed. What they don’t realize is that there are methods of detecting even traces of plagiarism.

There is also unintentional plagiarism, where you forget to cite a source or miss out on citing one particular part of information you took from a source. Unfortunately, even this comes in the list of clauses which define plagiarism. Hence you have absolutely no excuses to give, if you are accused of it.

The only way to stop yourself from committing deliberate plagiarism is to be aware of the consequences. Considering the strict laws against it, it will not be worth it for you to resort to it. Awareness of the consequences is the only thing that can motivate you to stay clear of it.

And, to avoid accidental plagiarism, it is very important to note the sources, as and when you copy a paragraph or a quotation. If you keep it for later, it is quite possible that you accidentally leave it out and end up getting accused of plagiarism. Make sure that you don’t leave your writing assignment to be done at the last minute. If you try to do it the night before it is due, it is possible that you forget to cite all the sources. There are many methods to cite the source. Each of the writing styles like MLA, APA, Harvard style and Chicago style have their own rules on how to go about it.

When given an assignment, check the guidelines for the style asked for and go through the style guide to see how you are supposed to cite the sources. If you start noting the sources from the time of research, you need not miss out on any of them while preparing the final draft. Whether the source is internet or journals or magazines, it should all be mentioned wherever it is quoted.

There are many methods of detecting plagiarism and there are programs which offer to check documents for it. It is always safe to run your research papers and other academic writing assignments through one of those, to make sure that you haven’t missed out on any sources to be cited.

Essay on Satire

Friday, October 30, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Essay writing is a part of almost all academic courses. But for those who are pursuing English as their main subject, good writing skills are of vital importance. English literature has so many sections and it consists of such a vast variety of literary works, that it takes a lot of effort to do justice to your literature studies. There are many genres of literature which only English literature students get to study in detail. One of them which is extremely popular and interesting to learn, is satire. To write an essay on satire or on a particular work which comes under this genre, you will need to understand this form of literature.

Satire is that literary form which talks about issues which the writer does not approve of, in a way that does not openly touch the topic. It is mostly presented in a comical form using sarcasm as the main weapon. It uses all types of literary forms like prose, verse and drama to reach out to the public. There are certain satires which are not comical too. This was not very common but it has been seen that all types of satire were appreciated by the public.

There were many issues which couldn’t be publicly opined about due to various reasons. Such issues were addressed through satirical works. When presented on stage, it just looked like a comedy or drama to those who had no relation to it. But good satires were written in such a way, as to convey the matter easily and very clearly to those who were involved in the issue.

This form of literary work became a favourite in expressing such issues because it proved to have much more effect than direct criticism. The issues addressed were mostly political or social and those of a very sensitive nature. Since these didn’t point directly or openly to the issue, the writer could not be ridiculed or held responsible for talking about the particular issue in question.

In time, due to the popularity of this literary form, many sub sections evolved out of it. Political satire and social satire are the most widely acknowledged sections of satire. The definition of these separate sections is clear from the given titles itself. You might have to look into these too, depending on the topic of your essay on satire.

Studying the satirical works of a particular period of time will give you a very good insight into the lifestyle of that period. It will also help you understand the negative aspects of the society which existed during that period.

When asked to write an essay on satire, you should try to read some of the famous satirical works. You could pick points, from the works you choose to read, to explain your view in your essay, as well. If you have been asked to write on a particular work in this genre, then you will have to study that particular work in detail. The nature of satire makes it extremely tough to interpret one. But all the same, it is very interesting for those who are good at the subject.

If you don’t feel confident about the task, consult those who are good at it. Checking out samples of other essays, research papers or term papers on satire will give you an idea of how to complete your assignment of writing an essay on satire. You can also refer to the articles written on this wonderful form of literature.

Writing a Book Report

Thursday, October 29, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Out of the many types of writing assignments you will be facing during your academic curriculum, one could be that of writing a book report. Understanding the difference between the different types of academic writing projects will help you in performing well in these assessments. You should use the given guidelines or instructions for the purpose of understanding the given assignment.

Many students confuse between a book report and a book review, even though the difference is quite evident from the names itself. A book review is where you read a book and convey your opinion of the book. It could include the positive as well as the negative aspects you find in the book. But while writing a book report you will be focusing on reporting the book as you have understood it.

You should keep it in mind while writing the report, that you are not there to criticize the book. You are merely conveying to the reader what you have understood about the book and the contents as you have seen it. You may write it in your own words and offer your opinion in a non-critical manner.

This particular type of project is easier compared to a research paper or a term paper because of the fact that you have to read and understand only one particular book. You will not have to spend hours searching for information amongst thick volumes of books, nor will you have to prove any point. Hence, with a little effort on your part, you can make a very good job of writing a book report.

Read the book twice, at the very least, in order to make sure that you have not forgotten to include any important points. After the first reading, prepare an outline with what you have understood. Then read it a second time and while at it, add the missing points to your outline as and when you find them. That way you can be sure of not having forgotten to mention any important part of the book in your report.

Once you have a complete outline, develop it into a rough draft. This rough draft can later be edited into a final draft. While editing the rough draft, cut it into the right size and make sure that you don’t delete any important portion of your report. Since it is a comparatively easy assignment, students tend to keep it for the last minute. This will not work though. A quick reading will not be enough for you to grasp the essence of the book. And relying on the articles written on the book by others and rewriting it in your own words also will not make your book report look impressive. To understand the book, you will have to read it yourself and write the report from your own point of view. Any professor can spot a paper which is just a reworded form of some other article.

Also remember to proof read your paper before submitting it. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and bad structure can make it difficult for the reader to follow what you are trying to convey. It will also make it look like you are not capable of handling even a simple assignment such as a book report.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Topic for Art Thesis

Monday, October 26, 2009 in Research Paper Writing Guide by Cwriter | No Comments |

Art is an extremely interesting subject to study. And if you are someone who is passionate about it, you will find it even more interesting to study it as a subject. It is one of those subjects which can be looked at and handled as a hobby even when you are writing an essay, term paper or a research paper on it. Many students choose it as a subject for their thesis because of their interest in art but preparing an art thesis is not exactly an easy job.

Most people are capable of appreciating an artwork and its intricacies. And many, who are collectors of famous works of art, can tell you quite a lot about the subject. But that will not be enough to study art as a subject and do a research on it. Interest in the subject will be most necessary for the purpose but interest alone will not be able to see you through the difficult task of preparing an art thesis.

There is a lot more to art than what strikes you from outside. To decide on the topic for your art thesis, you will have to first choose a work to write on and then decide what argument you can place. If it is a famous work then you must make sure that the topic you wish to argue about is available because most of the famous works get researched on very often. Your interpretation of the work should not, accidentally, be the same as any of those which have been researched on and proved by other researchers.

Interpreting someone else’s work is very easy when you are not obliged to prove anything. But when you are expected to prove whatever you say, it is a totally different matter. So make sure that the view you take on the work is something you can prove. The level of difficulty you choose should be according to how much effort you are willing to put in and how much pressure you can handle. You should also consider how much time you have been allotted for the task.

Another important thing to check before finalizing the topic is whether the work you wish to choose is easily accessible to you. Some subjects can be researched on with the help of existing information. But art is not one of them. To be able to interpret a work, you will most certainly have to see it more than once and be able to spend at least a few hours with it. If you can manage that, the rest can be done with the help of existing sources. Most of the famous works will be preserved in museums and the entry will be restricted. Hence you should make sure that the entry timings suit you and also that you will get as much time as you need for the purpose.

If you have chosen a topic that suits you well, preparing an art thesis can be a very interesting and exciting experience. If you are not sure of what to choose, you should consult someone who can help you with your decision. What matters most is that you get to enjoy what you do, thus making sure that your thesis turns out interesting and impressive.

Importance of Preparing a Research Paper Outline

Saturday, October 24, 2009 in Research Paper Writing Guide by Cwriter | No Comments |

One of the regular writing projects assigned to you during your academic course will be that of writing a research paper. Even though there are guidelines about how the research paper should look while being presented, there are no rules for the method of research paper writing. You can do your research in whichever way it is convenient for you. But while writing the research paper, there are certain methods which might help you do it in an easier and better way. Preparing a research paper outline is one of those factors which will save you many other troubles in the later stages of your research paper writing.

Many students keep their research paper writing for the day before the deadline. If that is the situation, then you will not have time proceed step-by-step or even in a reasonable way. You will be left with no option but to fill the sheets with whatever information you can find in that short period of time. And research papers written hastily are almost always a failure.

But if you are one of those who try to make the best out of every minute they have, then you can do it slowly and one step at a time. One of these steps which comes between the collection of necessary information and preparing the rough draft is that of preparing a research paper outline. Most students don’t bother with this step because they don’t find it important enough. But they are wrong.

The points you collect towards your research ought to be organized in such a way that it flows legibly from the introduction to the conclusion. It is not possible to find the information in any particular order. Hence it will be more sensible to arrange it all into a smoothly flowing order after you are done with your research and before it is elaborated. If you start elaborating it into a rough draft from a jumble of points, you will find that you end up with a poorly organized paper which is difficult to be sorted out as it is already fully elaborated. Moving a paragraph is, logically, much more difficult than moving a point.

A research paper outline will give you an easy overview of your work and help you make changes easily. It will give you an idea of the proportion of the collected information to that of the page limit. This, in turn, will give you a rough idea of how much you can afford to expand on each of the points. That way, you will have less to edit when you finally reach the task of preparing the final draft.

An outline will also help you spot any accidental digressions before you have wasted your precious time expanding irrelevant points. Considering all this, you can say that a good research paper outline is half the job done. And it will also see you effortlessly through the other half.

If you are too tight for time to prepare a research paper outline, you can take help from professionals. With a little help from the right people you can prepare an outstanding research paper, essay or term paper.
