How to Write a Character Analysis

Saturday, November 7, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Writing assignments will keep coming up every now and then during your academic curriculum. There will be research papers, term papers and essays of different types and genres. These writing assignments will be concentrated on your main subject even though you will be doing some of them on your languages and other subjects. For English literature students, literature essays will be a regular exercise. They will deal with different types of essays as they are specializing in the language. Character analysis is one type of essay literature students will have to get familiar with.

Writing a character analysis is slightly different from the other essays. The structure will remain the same as other essays with an introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion, but the contents of these will differ from normal essays.

As the name suggests, this type of essay will focus on a particular character or all the characters in a particular book. The guidelines will specify whether you have to study one character and analyze it or you have to give an analytical report of all the characters in that book. If you have been asked to write a character analysis of one character, then the task is relatively simple.

Read the book at least twice to determine the role played by the character in question. Reading once will not give you a focused idea of the character. You have to give a detailed analysis of the character’s nature, the role and its entry and exit in the book, as applicable. Give an analytical review of how the character has influenced the story or the book. Discuss if the character has had a negative impact or a positive one. Give your view on whether the rest of the characters and story has been affected by that. You are allowed to discuss anything and everything that could be directly related to the character.

You will also need to evaluate the relation of the other characters to this particular character. You will need to figure out whether any of them needs to be mentioned in your analysis of the specific character. It is preferable to avoid mentioning other characters when the analysis is to be done on a single character. But sometimes it becomes inevitable to mention one or two of them to justify the analysis of the one in question. That is acceptable but do not detail on any characters other than the one in question. Digressing off into other characters will not only waste your space but also take the focus off the given character, thus making it look less like an analysis of that character and more like that, of all the characters in the book.

Understanding the guidelines and applying them to the point is the key to being able to write a very good essay. A character analysis is a rather simple task and if you just put in a little bit of effort, you can score very well in this particular type of writing assignment. You might also be asked to write research papers which come under the genre of character analysis. But the basic rule remains the same – study the character well and give a detailed analysis.

What to Know Before Writing a Book Review

Thursday, November 5, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Reviews are a part of all that invites public opinion. Books, movies, articles, journals and all other things that are aimed at the public, gets reviewed. But book reviews still remain on the top of the list of choice, of experts in the field as well as readers. It is mainly because books are the most preferred medium of knowledge and entertainment even in this modern age.

Writing a book review is not something that is limited to academic writing assignments. It has found its place among the professional writing sector as well. So if you manage to master the skill, you will find it being of much more use to you than that of securing good grades in your projects. To write an interesting book review, you first need to know what it is all about.

In a book review, you give the public your opinion on the negative and positive aspects of the book. Most people rely on reviews while buying books for themselves. Hence, it is important that the information you give is genuine and useful.

In the review, you will be expected to give your opinion, about the content of the book and the author. If there is a known reason or incident which is related to the writing of the book, that needs to be mentioned as well. Offer your opinion on how well the story has been said and how perfectly the characters fit into the story. You are allowed to criticize the technical aspects as well as the writing style used in the book, even though it is ideal not to be abusive. There is no use in just generally saying what is good or what is bad. State the reason why you think so and give a reasonable explanation for your judgment.

You can discuss the story where it is necessary, but without revealing the complete story line. You have to make sure that the end or climax has not been disclosed. You can mention your opinion about the ending but while staying strictly within the limits. If you reveal too much about the book, there will not be much left for the reader to read in the book, which will be considered unacceptable in a book review.

There are many patterns which writers choose to write a book review. There are reviews which are divided into sections with sub-titles showing which aspect of the book each paragraph is about. There are also reviews which are told in the manner of an essay, without any sub-headings or subtitles, just mentioning within the paragraph as to what it is about. It solely depends on you as to which way you want to do it. If you have a way with words, the pattern will not matter much.

Just remember that your opinion is supposed to help your reader take a decision on the book he is considering to read or buy. Hence, be very careful with what you are saying. Writing a good and interesting book review may not be easy, but it is not impossible. All you need to do is, understand the basics and know and remember your limits.

How and Why to Avoid Plagiarism

Tuesday, November 3, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Plagiarism is an issue which has been haunting the writing industry from the time it evolved into a profession. But in earlier days there was not much awareness about the issue. There were not many methods available either, to detect this crime or confirm it. But in today’s world, there are strong laws against it and the punishments are rather severe. And unfortunately, even unintentional or accidental plagiarism is considered punishable.

This issue has been noticed, most commonly, among students. If you dig till its root, you will find that there are many underlying causes which lead to deliberate or intentional plagiarism in students. Most students, when faced with academic writing assignments, feel unsure about their own writing skills and adapt to copying and pasting information from web sources or books. Some others simply find it an easy job to copy and paste rather than doing it themselves. And there are also those, who keep their assignments till the last minute and realize that they have time for nothing but to copy and paste from articles written by others.

Internet has aided plagiarism to a big extent. Most students take it for granted that, among so much information one or two stolen paragraphs will go unnoticed. What they don’t realize is that there are methods of detecting even traces of plagiarism.

There is also unintentional plagiarism, where you forget to cite a source or miss out on citing one particular part of information you took from a source. Unfortunately, even this comes in the list of clauses which define plagiarism. Hence you have absolutely no excuses to give, if you are accused of it.

The only way to stop yourself from committing deliberate plagiarism is to be aware of the consequences. Considering the strict laws against it, it will not be worth it for you to resort to it. Awareness of the consequences is the only thing that can motivate you to stay clear of it.

And, to avoid accidental plagiarism, it is very important to note the sources, as and when you copy a paragraph or a quotation. If you keep it for later, it is quite possible that you accidentally leave it out and end up getting accused of plagiarism. Make sure that you don’t leave your writing assignment to be done at the last minute. If you try to do it the night before it is due, it is possible that you forget to cite all the sources. There are many methods to cite the source. Each of the writing styles like MLA, APA, Harvard style and Chicago style have their own rules on how to go about it.

When given an assignment, check the guidelines for the style asked for and go through the style guide to see how you are supposed to cite the sources. If you start noting the sources from the time of research, you need not miss out on any of them while preparing the final draft. Whether the source is internet or journals or magazines, it should all be mentioned wherever it is quoted.

There are many methods of detecting plagiarism and there are programs which offer to check documents for it. It is always safe to run your research papers and other academic writing assignments through one of those, to make sure that you haven’t missed out on any sources to be cited.

How to Write a Narrative Essay

Monday, November 2, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Narrative essay is one type of essay which will appear among your academic writing assignments every now and then. There are certain aspects which form the criteria for confirming the genre of an essay. The quality of the essay is determined by the level to which these aspects have been included in your assignment. Learning and understanding the rules and aspects of different types of essays is important if you wish to perform well in your academic writing projects.

Narration is the technique by which you present a story or an incident. It could be a story or a poem or it could even be a few scattered events which, when combined, forms a story. But the main aspect of narration is that it has to be said from the point of view of the narrator. There are instances where you will be asked specifically to narrate it from the point of view of another person. But unless it has been specified so, it is to be understood that the story is to be said, or narrated from your point of view. This is, indeed, the rule that applies to a narrative essay also.

While writing this type of essay, you will have to pay a lot of attention to the frame work or the outline of the story or event you are narrating. If the narration has to be smooth and interesting, it has to be in a proper order. If you are narrating a story, you should watch the thread of your narration. The order in which the paragraphs should be placed depends fully on the story in question, your level of education and also the kind of audience you are addressing.

Narration is an art. Those who have a flair for it finds it very easy to bring twists and turns in their narration and they also manage to surprise and sometimes shock the audience every now and then without confusing them. But if you are not sure of your narrative skills, it is always better to keep it simple. An interesting narration can be defined as something that is simple enough to reach out to the audience but at the same time, complex enough to hold their interest from the beginning till the end.

The body structure is important in all types of essays but it is even more so, in a narrative essay. The introduction can talk very briefly about what the narrative is about and some general facts about the narrative. If it is a story, you can give some information on the author or if it is an event, then some background information on the event you are about to discuss. The body paragraphs will contain the complete narrative and the conclusion will give a summary of the story or your opinion of the story. Remember to keep your opinion neutral and strictly avoid criticism.

Even though narration is an art, there are no skills which can’t be mastered, if you put in some effort. You can learn how to write a good narrative essay, if you understand the main aspects of this particular method of essay writing.

Facts to Know Before Writing a Biology Essay

Saturday, October 31, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Biology can be generally called as the detailed study of living organisms. You will be studying the subject and its sub divisions in detail if you are a science student. Science subjects have lesser writing assignments than art subjects or social studies. All the same, you will still be given several essays and research papers related to your subject for the assessment of your theoretical skills. You should understand the subject well enough to be able to score well in your biology essay projects.

Just a basic knowledge of biology will not suffice for you to prepare an interesting biology essay. Biology is a subject with many sub-divisions. The main ones are zoology, botany and micro biology. Each of these has further sub divisions which deal with finer details of each section.

Zoology is the science that studies the nature and structure of animals, which includes human beings. It deals with the physical aspects of the species. Anatomy, histology, physiology etc are the sub divisions of zoology. You will study each of these sub divisions in detail if you have chosen to pursue zoology as your main subject.

Botany, or the plant science, is the study of all form of plant life. It not only deals with the structural aspects of plants but it also studies the scientific aspects of plant life. This is guessed to be one of the oldest of sciences as man used to live in forests and used to depend on trees for most of their basic needs. So it is only logical to guess that he must have started studying it around the same time even though it was not known as a subject at the time.

The toughest of the three main divisions of biology is micro-biology. This is the science which was devised to study micro organisms in detail. Micro-organisms also come under the definition of living beings, even though it can’t be seen with naked eyes. Micro-biology is still considered to be one of those sciences which has revealed its least to man. Even though it has attracted researchers for centuries, this branch of science has not seen enough progress due to the complex nature of micro-organisms. Virology, bacteriology, parasitology, mycology etc are its sub divisions. Each, as the names indicate, deals with a different group of micro organisms.

Biology is a sum total of all these subjects, the studies of which form the base of our existence. Many other sciences are highly dependant on biological studies for their development. A very good example of one science which owes a lot to biology, is medical science. Depending on the topic of your essay, you should study the particular division of biology in detail, to be able to write an impressive essay.

Remember that being a science student is not an excuse for neglecting your writing assignments. In fact, you will find that learning the theory is the key to understanding the practical part of a science subject. If Biology is one of your subjects, then your biology essays and research papers deserve as much attention as your practical assessments.

Writing a Book Report

Thursday, October 29, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Out of the many types of writing assignments you will be facing during your academic curriculum, one could be that of writing a book report. Understanding the difference between the different types of academic writing projects will help you in performing well in these assessments. You should use the given guidelines or instructions for the purpose of understanding the given assignment.

Many students confuse between a book report and a book review, even though the difference is quite evident from the names itself. A book review is where you read a book and convey your opinion of the book. It could include the positive as well as the negative aspects you find in the book. But while writing a book report you will be focusing on reporting the book as you have understood it.

You should keep it in mind while writing the report, that you are not there to criticize the book. You are merely conveying to the reader what you have understood about the book and the contents as you have seen it. You may write it in your own words and offer your opinion in a non-critical manner.

This particular type of project is easier compared to a research paper or a term paper because of the fact that you have to read and understand only one particular book. You will not have to spend hours searching for information amongst thick volumes of books, nor will you have to prove any point. Hence, with a little effort on your part, you can make a very good job of writing a book report.

Read the book twice, at the very least, in order to make sure that you have not forgotten to include any important points. After the first reading, prepare an outline with what you have understood. Then read it a second time and while at it, add the missing points to your outline as and when you find them. That way you can be sure of not having forgotten to mention any important part of the book in your report.

Once you have a complete outline, develop it into a rough draft. This rough draft can later be edited into a final draft. While editing the rough draft, cut it into the right size and make sure that you don’t delete any important portion of your report. Since it is a comparatively easy assignment, students tend to keep it for the last minute. This will not work though. A quick reading will not be enough for you to grasp the essence of the book. And relying on the articles written on the book by others and rewriting it in your own words also will not make your book report look impressive. To understand the book, you will have to read it yourself and write the report from your own point of view. Any professor can spot a paper which is just a reworded form of some other article.

Also remember to proof read your paper before submitting it. Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors and bad structure can make it difficult for the reader to follow what you are trying to convey. It will also make it look like you are not capable of handling even a simple assignment such as a book report.

Writing a Psychology Essay

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in All About Essay by Cwriter | No Comments |

Psychology is, as you should already know, the study of mind in detail. If you have chosen to pursue psychology as your main subject, you will be doing a lot of research on the subject. Psychology essays will keep coming up in your academic assignments. And unlike other subjects, psychology is much more complex in nature as mind is one thing that no human has been able to fully conquer yet.

Human psychology has further subdivisions like clinical psychology, forensic psychology, social psychology, criminal psychology and many more. The complexity of psychology comes mainly from the fact that no two minds work alike. There is also the fact that one human mind can respond in a hundred different ways when faced with different situations. These factors have caused psychology to evolve from just a study of human behaviour into something so vast and so complex.

There is also another branch of psychology which deals with animal behaviour. Even though it is not officially termed as animal psychology, it is also a part of psychology which is generally referred to as ‘the study of animal behaviour’.

While writing a psychology essay, one challenge could be to focus on the topic. Psychology is one subject which can easily cause accidental digressions. This also is due to the complexity of human mind. One discussion might lead to another and you may not realize it till you have strayed off too far. So always remember to focus on the topic of your essay.

There are certain other sciences also which you might have to refer to while writing your psychology essay. These sciences which do not come under psychology are, nevertheless, connected to its study and research very much. One such science is sociology and another example would be neurology. These branches of science are very important while researching on issues related to psychology.

You will also find that psychology has provided solutions for so many medical issues that it has become a vital part of the treatment for many serious diseases. And it has proved to be effective where all medicines have failed. This has been discovered to be due to the role human mind plays in the well being of an individual.

While writing the psychology essay, you should pay attention to the structure of the essay. Arrange it in such a way that it would be easy for the reader to understand. Since you will be interpreting and discussing something so complex, as a human mind, it will not be easy to convey your ideas effectively unless you have written your essay well, without grammatical or structural errors. Make sure that different thoughts are arranged into separate paragraphs and that the paragraphs are well organised.

If you keep all these in mind while writing your psychology essay, research paper or term paper, you need not face any trouble with your assignment. Understanding the topic and good planning are two things which can make any academic writing assignment an interesting and enjoyable task.
