Essay contest

An essay contest gives you a chance to compete with others in writing on different topics. You would be competing with other people in your age group or with your qualifications and it this is a chance to gain recognition as a good writer. Such tournaments are conducted by newspapers, websites, and foundations or even by your school and college.

The contest is usually announced for a specific topic or theme and the paper has to focus only on that topic and not diverse into other concepts, for example, on a topic such as ‘Why Abraham Lincoln was important to the Civil War’ should concentrate only on the role of Lincoln in the war. It should not explain about how he grew up, what he studied, who was his teacher, the hardships he faced, etc. Getting the focus on the topic is very important.

Before beginning your essay contest, first understand the topic. You would be expected to write your assignment within a specified number of words. Some tournaments pose the topic as a question and you can provide pro or anti arguments. For example, the subject can be ‘Was US intervention in Iraq necessary’. In such a case, you should either argue that it was necessary or that US intervention was not desired. Once you understand the topic, thoroughly research it and there are a number of books, online resources, Journals and magazines that provide the required content. When you refer to material from such resources, be sure to cite the source from where the content was obtained.

Such essay contests essentially test your skills at logical arguments and how you introduce various points to support the logic. Do not introduce too many themes as this will dilute the paper and the reader will be confused. Stick to a couple of themes and expound on them to cover all aspects. While depth of argument is desired, it should not delve too deeply into a point and make the reader feel lost. Clarity of thought, use of simple words and sentences and an adequate structure are important.

Begin the paper with a couple of lines that tell what you would be covering and why you feel your view is justified. Then build up the content by stating a few points and then continue to expand on these points only. The composition should have a conclusion where the sum of your arguments is put forth in a couple of sentences. A properly structured document may help you win.
